WCHS Senior Accepted into Ivy League University

(SPRINGFIELD, Ky.) – John Alexander “Alex” Taylor, a Washington County High School graduating senior, has been accepted into Yale University, one of the only eight Ivy League universities in the United States. According to the U.S. News & World Report, Ivy League schools are “considered the most sought-after institutions of higher learning in the country and around the world.” Yale University, a private university in Connecticut known for its prestige and academic rigor, was founded in 1701. Taylor’s acceptance into an Ivy League university is believed to be the first in the school and district’s recent history.
Taylor said the application process was extensive and included interviews with Yale alumni. He visited the Yale campus for a tour, and also visited the University of Chicago, as he was considering attending that school as well and weighing his options. Taylor says that ultimately, Yale’s economics program, alumni connections and career opportunities led him to make the decision to attend the university. At WCHS, Taylor is a member of the WCHS Commander Basketball team, the Commander Track team, Commander Cross Country team, is a Gifted and Talented student, is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta, Youth for Christ, the WCHS Student Council, St. Dominic Youth Group, is a Springfield-Washington County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and is employed at Parkview Home Center. During his senior year, he was also named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

“Alex is a great person and scholar that I will always remember because he is exceptional,” says WCHS Spanish teacher Shanna Letner. “He is intrinsically motivated and has a passion for learning. I’ve never had a student that is more driven to succeed. He strives to excel in every aspect of his life, is always optimistic, and is an incredibly humble young man. He was the first student that I have taught in all four levels of Spanish. I am proud that I had the opportunity to watch him grow over the last four years of his educational journey and I look forward to seeing him excel at Yale in the next four.”
“I couldn’t be prouder of Alex Taylor for his acceptance into Yale University,” says Chase Burdette, math teacher at WCHS. “Alex has been an exceptional student throughout his high school career. He is dedicated, intellectually curious, and always striving for excellence. His work ethic, leadership, and character have made a lasting impression on everyone who has had the pleasure of teaching him. Watching him grow into the remarkable young person he is today has been an absolute privilege. Yale is gaining not only a brilliant mind but a truly outstanding individual.”
“The most striking thing about Alex Taylor is how humble he remains despite his considerable and amazing accomplishments,” says Charlie Cox, principal at WCHS. “This young man is truly remarkable and has made the very most of his time at Washington County High School. I couldn’t be happier for Alex and his family. Though it will come as no surprise to anyone, Alex will do truly amazing things. Yale is just the next step in his journey.”
Taylor plans to have a career in economics and possibly become a development economist. He is the son of Paul and Amy Taylor.
